GAMBY Medical Mission
In 2012 the door closed to us for further ministry in Pawe so we began discussing with Dr. Betta Mengistu and the Beza International Church where we should focus our efforts. This led Joshua’s Way to begin a ministry partnership called the GAMBY Medical Mission in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia as of September.
Dr. Betta and the leaders of the Beza Church suggested that we consider helping the poor in Bahir Dar and the surrounding area to receive medical care through the GAMBY Medical Teaching Hospital founded by Dr. Gebeyaw Tiruneh Kassa and his associates. Dr. Gebeyaw is a member of the Beza International Church, and a member of the church’s Leadership Board.
Members of Joshua’s Way Board of Directors met with Dr. Gebeyaw to further explore the possibility of cooperating with him and the other physicians in ministry to the medical needs of the poor. The needs are many, but the physicians at the hospital had already identified a particular need through their OB/GYN clinic.
The doctors told us that if they saw 28 or 30 women in the OB/GYN clinic, 7 or 8 of them were affected by uterine prolapse, a medical condition where the womb collapses through the birth canal. Uterine prolapse can only be corrected through surgery. This particular condition, if untreated, leads to associated problems that result in the shunning or ostracizing of these women so that they are unable to participate in the normal activities of life with their families or neighbors.
For around $375.00, these women received the care that they desperately required. It is our hope that many women will be restored to full participation in society through this care.
As this need is met, Joshua’s Way plans to continue assisting the GAMBY Hospital in meeting other medical needs of the poor in Bahir Dar. Would you prayerfully consider contributing for this ministry to the medical needs of the poor in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia?
Donations should be made payable to Joshua’s Way. Please note on the memo line of your check that your gift is for the “GAMBY Medical Mission” and mail it to:
